FIDS - "Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey" was the original name for what became the "British Antarctic Survey" (BAS). Members of FIDS referred to themselves as "Fids" and the name stuck. It is usually taken as meaning someone who has travelled to Antarctica and worked on a FIDS or BAS ship or base.

From time to time I get emails from people trying locate ex FIDS, these people are often not ex-fids themselves, so I thought I'd add another option for you to post your message and add your email address for contact. If you would like to use this option, then use the registration form, but include your own name and email.

Registration

If you register, your details will be posted in the "Contact details" area.

All fields required (except further information);

	Name including nick-name if applicable
	Base or ship
	Year/s. If you wintered in 1990 for example, then you may have arrived in the Antarctic in 1989 and left in1991. Please just enter 1990 here.
	Email. Your email will be stored on a Cool Antarctica data base and not passed onto any other party without your consent. Consent will only be sought in response to a specific request by email to Cool Antarctica. In this case the received email will be forwarded as received and decision to reply left with you. Privacy
	Active email link? If you check this box, then an email link will appear next to your name that can be clicked on to email you directly. If not checked, your email address will be retained and you will be contacted only directly by Cool Antarctica. As from Dec 2008 - all active email addresses will now be encrypted - so they cannot be easily followed and harvested by spammers, you may post your email address with confidence. I will also start to catch-up on already held email addresses to encrypt those too.
	Current location. Town / city and country if not UK.

Privacy - Your email address and any other details will not be passed on to any third party or sold as part of a mailing list - cross my heart and hope for an enforced winter.
