The ice-foot is the large "step" of ice to the left of this
picture. It forms through the winter when the tide rises and falls leaving a
thin layer of water to freeze each time. Then the sea-ice breaks out and
leaves the ice-foot behind until time and tide and wind and wave break it
up. These penguins have a job to get back to their nests as the tide has
gone out when they were at sea.
In the meantime, they wander back and forth following anyone
who looks like he (or she) may know the way - invariably, none of them know
the way at all.
