Diary entry: 1 - For the last week we have been camping on sea-ice hundreds of miles from land near to our trapped ship. Today our ship was crushed by ice and is sinking, it is being held in place by the ice, we are trying to rescue as much food and as many supplies as we can before it goes.

Explanatory caption: The Endurance lies crushed, still above the ice, though shortly to sink. 28 men led by Ernest Shackleton are left in the middle of the Weddell Sea with no hope of rescue.
