Dog Kennels at Cape Royds

Though the early British expeditions took sled dogs with them, the expeditioners were insufficiently
practiced at using the dogs properly. Also the make up of the teams and overall numbers were inadequate. The result was that travel was largely by man-hauling with the subsequent toll it took on the fitness and reserves.
This early less than impressive record with dogs is in contrast with the way that dog teams were used much successfully in later years of Antarctic exploration before mechanical transport took over.
