Down is the lightest and warmest of all insulating materials for cold weather outdoors clothing, it is highly compressible and will spring back again. "Fill power" given as 500/600/700 etc. is an indication of quality, it is the volume one ounce will occupy uncompressed, higher is better. Down is not good when wet, so it is great at really cold temperatures but not so much if there is a chance of rain. Cheaper types are bulked out with feathers.
