Where the name comes from: The Greek philosopher Pliny mentioned the island of Topazus (today known as Zabargad) in the Red Sea where topaz was first mined.
Where the stones come from: Widespread, Brazil has the largest and most important deposits, also Russia, China, Pakistan and the USA, particular colors often come from particular localities
Chemistry: A silicate  of aluminium and fluorine, Al2SiO4(F,OH)2
Colors: Pure topaz is colorless, there are many different impurities that may give it almost any color though rarely natural pink, purple or deep blue.
...and another thing: The color of topaz can be changed by heating or by electron or neutron bombardment. In these ways are the otherwise rare blue and pink shades obtained.
