Next The South Pole barber pole with the flags of the Antarctic Treaty signatories. Older visitors were known to run around the Pole counter clockwise to subtract days from their age. Periodically, the Pole has to be moved to the new location of the South Pole because the 9,000 foot thick ice sheet slowly creeps toward the coast.
