When the station was first built, water was obtained by digging snow and ice from this "mine" with the entrance inside the station. This also allowed glaciology studies as the mine deepened. By our time it had been abandoned as a source of water as it was too deep and too steep. The timbers seen here support strain gauges to determine snow/ice movement.
