Looking across McMurdo Sound

Later in the season (February) after the sea ice has broken up (donated slide). By this time the air field had been abandoned for the season and of course flights to the interior stations were also stopped. Trash in foreground is McMurdo's dump - trash would be pushed onto the sea ice and be allowed to freeze, then carried to sea with the ice later in the season. This included sewage, as the toilet facilities lacked any flush water system; oil drums would be cut open and placed beneath the toilets. When full they would be allowed to freeze, then pushed onto the sea ice along with the other trash.
