A hole would be cut in the sea ice to allow instruments, divers, etc., access and a small shed placed over the hole. On one occasion, a scientist entered the shed to find seal poking up through the hole holding this fish in its mouth. The scientist grabbed the fish and retrieved this portion, the head remaining with the seal.
The mummified penguin under his arm was found inland.
