These planes were equipped with Teflon coated skis to allow landing on snow surfaces. (4 DEC 1960)
When Lockheed was delivering one of the C-130s (there were four such planes used in the Antarctic) to the Navy at Quonset Point, RI, they wanted to have the plane fly over the field using only one engine, but the Navy decided that would be a bit hazardous. The point being that this plane was capable of doing this.
