Crevasses seen from the air

As polar plateau snow and ice pass over mountain ridges, it is bent and cracks, like bending a soft cookie. A relatively thin layer of snow then bridges over the gaps hiding them from view on the ground and posing a major risk to overland parties. There have been episodes of a bridge breaking and a crevasse swallowing a large tractor.
