The first years of whaling at Signy saw the processing of the whales take place on factory ships such as the Orwell here. It was only later that a shore-built station was built. Like many ships that visited Signy in the early years of its occupation, the Orwell left it's name attached to a landmark, in this case the Orwell glacier that is just to the left of this picture. The prominent hill to the right, Jane Peak is also named after an early visiting ship, the Jane.
