1948 - A small graveyard with the graves of five Norwegian whalers is about a mile from the base as the skua flies, it has been maintained by base members over the years, with the crosses getting replaced as they have been knocked over by seals or started to rot and the paint touched-up every now and then.
There was always a strong feeling of what it would be like to die in such a place far from home or to lose a friend and compatriot. Despite how most of us wintered felt that Signy was "our" base and "our" island, it only ever felt like a place to visit and not really to belong to except in memories.
