Delayed for a month by heavy sea-ice, the RRS Bransfield broke through the rotten but still thick sea-ice to get close enough to base for relief. Instead of being at the mercy of tide and weather as usual and taking a few days, this relief took far less time as cargo could be loaded onto sledges pulled by skidoos right from the ship to where they were needed on base. This by-passed the usual need for a whole chain of FIDS to lift large heavy boxes manually out of boats onto the jetty and then along to where they were needed.
