When fresh water was in particularly short supply and there wasn't enough snow for snow-blocking, brash ice blown into the cove would have to be relied on as a source of fresh water.
Depending on the size of the bits, this could be difficult and hard work or very difficult and very hard work. Big heavy pieces of ice had to be picked up form where they were floating in the sea and carried onshore to the melt tank. Think of this the next time you complain about your water bill.
