Getting fresh water from a glacier - 1984. There are many pictures in this section of snow-blocking and ice-blocking to get fresh water, but this one has to show the most extreme form. All the factors of difficulties in getting ice from a glacial source apply, with the addition that this one is taking place at an actual glacier snout - the Orwell Glacier about a mile or so from base as the skidoo drives.
Particularly difficult in hacking man-moveable sized lumps from building sized pieces of ice in the first place with the additional difficulty of then loading them onto a sledge, driving them back to base and unloading them in the melt tank.
It happened as there was no alternative form of water as snow for blocking or nearer ice available.
