The South Pole Traverse also known as the McMurdo-South Pole Highway, is a 995 mile (1600 km) "road" from McMurdo to the South Pole. It was made by filling crevasses and levelling snow to allow the progress of vehicles, usually as a caravan of powerful tractors pulling a string of around 5 connected sledges with living quarters for the drivers and cargo for delivery to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.
