Into a fresh-water lake in this case. Limnology in the form of studying Signy's many freshwater lakes has been carried on for several decades giving a detailed record of the lakes chemistry and biology. The advantage of Signy's lakes is that they would be ice-covered and walk-able for much of the year, so sampling becomes quite straightforward once you have broken through the ice, no messing about in boats needed.
