1975 - Probably the last day it will be possible to go in boats before the spring. This ice looks quite thick at an inch or so (2.5cm) but has a very spongy structure at first so is easily broken by a small inflatable boat such as this. It will also provide no barrier at all to the divers whether dropping in or coming back up from below.
Also makes for very useful "I was well 'ard me" type pics to show off when you get back.
