Ernest Shackleton, Trans Antarctic Expedition, 1914 - 1917
1915 - The Aurora in McMurdo Sound with the Ross Sea Party. This element of the expedition was tasked with setting depots for the Trans-Antarctic party to use on their way across to the Ross Sea area via the South Pole. As the Endurance was caught in sea-ice and subsequently sank, their efforts were in vain as the Trans-Antarctic party never came. They had a range of trials and adventures of their own before Shackleton himself came to relieve the men of the shore party.
