1902 - Otto Nordenskjold (2nd left) and officers on the the "Antarctic", note the wood, partly for hut building. The ship was crushed by ice 25 miles off shore, parties of 6 and 3 men were forced to overwinter with minimal supplies, all were rescued by the Argentine ship Uruguay


1912 - Edgar Evans with Captain Scott's South Pole party dies in his sleeping bag on the return from the pole.


1899 - First dogs arrive in Antarctica at Cape Adare on the Southern Cross, this was also the first night anyone spent on the Antarctic continent. During unloading 7 men were isolated with a tent by a blizzard, they survived by bringing in the dogs to lay on them for warmth.
