1913 - Memorial service for Captain Scott and his Polar Party held at St. Paul's Cathedral, London, 4 days after news of their deaths reached New Zealand.
1899 - after a huge effort cutting two trenches with saws and axes through 2.1m thick ice to open water from the bow and stern of the Belgica to speed melting, the ship was freed from the ice. She had been stuck for 13 months, though would not reach open sea for another month.
