1911. Paraselene, a halo around the moon - McMurdo Sound, 10.30 am. Also known as moon dogs, formed by ice crystals in the atmosphere reflecting light from the moon, one of a number of atmospheric phenomena that are relatively more common in the polar regions, especially as in this case in the depths of the Polar Night, here just six days from Midwinter's Day. A watercolour by Edward Wison painted while at the expedition base with Scott's South Pole Expedition.
