1929 - American Expedition leader Richard Byrd with Bern Balchen, Ashley McKinley, and Harold June made the first flight over the South Pole in Ford Trimotor monoplane, a round trip of 18 hours and 41 minutes. To gain altitude over the Polar Plateau (the South Pole is at almost 10,000ft) they had to dump empty fuel tanks and their emergency supplies.

1910 - The Japanese Antarctic Expedition, a private and underfunded effort, led by Nobu Shirase (seated centre) on board the Kainan Maru sails from Tokyo harbour with 26 men and 27 sled dogs.
