Historical Antarctic Pictures and Events
1935 - Caroline Mikkelsen becomes the first woman to set foot on Antarctica. She was with her husband the captain of the M/S Thorshavn a resupply ship instructed to look for new lands as part of its duties and landed on the Tryne Islands near the current Australian Davis station.
1823 - 20th Feb. James Weddell, Esqr R.N - The brig Jane (154 tons) and cutter Beaufoy meet at 74deg 15' the highest southern latitude at the time in what would later be called the Weddell Sea. The Jane was an American ship taken as a prize and first used as a whaler in 1818. The event was celebrated with hoisting the colours, three cheers, the firing of a gun and an extra ration of rum.
