1908 - The second unsuccessful attempt to climb Mt. Erebus on Shackleton's Nimrod expedition, here carrying a loaded sledge across kenyte lava. This party reached 2000ft and were trapped in their tent for 5 days by a blizzard. Another attempt reached the summit on.
1913 - Douglas Mawson reaches Aladdin's Cave (a small shelter and depot dug into the ice) after a harrowing journey including the loss of his two travelling companions. From barely surviving on dog meat he finds three oranges and a pineapple which had been brought from the ship.
1898 - First sledge journey in Antarctica on the Belgica expedition.
