1903 - Otto Nordenskjold's ship The Antarctic is crushed by sea-ice 25 miles off Paulet Island stranding 19 men. They reach land after crossing broken sea-ice for 16 days with more than a ton of food, 240 litres of petrol and the ships' cat amongst other supplies for the winter.
1916 - The ship Aurora breaks out of an ice floe that has held it for 9 months since being blown out into the southern ocean from Ross Island.
