Ernest Shackleton, Trans Antarctic Expedition on the ship Endurance, 1914 - 1917.
1914 - Two of the 69 sled dogs on board Shackleton's ship Endurance on the way south. This gives an indication of how small the ship was and how little space there was to exercise them. Most dogs were mixed breeds and weighed about 100lbs each, a little heavier than most sled dogs.
Roald Amundsen, Norwegian South Pole Expedition on the ship Fram, 1910 - 1912.
1911 - Amundsen:
"-52C (-61.6F), breeze dead ahead, dogs tightly curled have to be lifted to harness. An early stop to build snow huts, warmer than tents in this temp. Liquid in the compasses has frozen. Heart-stopping small drops in the surface with a booming roar as snow settles."
