1910 - "Icing the ship in the pack".

Pack ice is frozen sea water and so is salty, but trapped in the pack or floating in open water leads are small ice-bergs and icy rubble that has broken off from them, these are fresh water and can be collected to be melted by waste heat from the ships engine.
