1916 - Perce Blackborow famed polar stowaway aboard Shackleton's 'Endurance expedition on Elephant Island has the frostbitten toes of his left foot amputated by Drs Macklin and McIlroy in a hut made from upturned boats heated by a fire of blubber and penguin skins. Chloroform was used as anaesthetic. The operation was successful, the other men sheltered in a nearby cave while waiting.


1910 - Captain Robert Scott's ship, the Terra Nova sails from Cardiff, Wales for Antarctica, it will be his last expedition. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RR8aNabrWL8
