1909 - Edgeworth David, Mackay and Mawson reach the Magnetic South Pole on Shackleton's Nimrod expedition. "I hereby take possession of this area containing the Magnetic Pole for the British Empire" - "We were too utterly weary to be capable of any amount of exultation".
