1912 - Scott's South Pole party begin the journey back to Ross Island. This was Scott's 2nd expedition to Antarctica, both were pioneering extensively scientific operations which left an enormous legacy of research and exploration that exists to this day.
1912 - Nobu Shirase on the Kainan Maru with the Japanese Antarctic Expedition enter the Bay of Whales where Amundsen's ship Fram is anchored, Amundsen will return from the pole in a week.
