1912 - Nobu Shirase's "Dash Patrol" on the Japanese Antarctic Expedition reach their farthest south at 80° 5' S. Virtually ignored on leaving Japan he was received as a hero on his return. His was the first non-European team to explore Antarctica.
1820 - Russian, Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen claims to be the first human to lay eyes on the continent of Antarctica.
