1940 - 34 tonne, 55 foot long Snow Cruiser disembarks the ship "North Star" at Little America Station in the Bay of Whales - with great difficulty. It proves unable to move through snow effectively and is eventually abandoned.
1947 - the Central Group of ships of Operation Highjump under Admiral Byrd, the largest expedition to Antarctica reach the Bay of Whales. The construction of Little America IV is begun. 4,700 men, 13 ships, 19 airplanes, four helicopters, and a large contingent of scientists.
