1979 - A sightseeing (non-landing) flight on Air New Zealand Flight TE901 from Christchurch New Zealand crashes into Mount Erebus on Ross Island, Antarctica killing all 257 people on board. All human remains were recovered but the broken up aircraft remains being seasonally covered up by snow or exposed.

Such flights had been going for about 2 years at the time of the crash, they were suspended following it until 2013.
