1841 - James Clark Ross with the Erebus and Terror reaches a new farthest south of 78° 04' S after sailing 250 miles along the front of the Great Ice Barrier (now the Ross Ice Shelf) in the Ross Sea looking for an inlet to reach closer to the South Pole.
