Roald Amundsen, Norwegian South Pole Expedition on the ship Fram, 1910 - 1912.
1911 - Amundsen's party on the way to the South Pole building a marker for a depot from blocks cut from the surrounding snow with a flag on top. Despite the size, a white marker on a white plateau can still be difficult to see in low contrast conditions.
