Erich von Drygalski, German National Antarctic Expedition on the ship Gauss, 1901 - 1903.
1902 - The German ship Gauss. Leader Erich von Drygalski ascends in a tethered hydrogen balloon to 490m, he can talk to the ship through a telephone line.
"It was so warm up there I could even take off my gloves".
Note the large wind tail of snow extending behind the ship.
