Douglas Mawson, Australasian Antarctic Expedition on the ship Aurora, 1911 - 1914
1912 - Blizzard at Cape Denison, Adelie Land. Winter conditions here in one of the world's windiest places were often such that crampons and ice-axes were needed to make simple progress such as here to get ice for freshwater from the nearby glacier.
When the Aurora had arrived and unloaded it had been during a period of unusual calm, the true climate of the area soon reasserted itself once the base had been established.
Ernest Shackleton, Trans Antarctic Expedition on the ship Endurance, 1914 - 1917
1916 - The tug Yelcho returning from its rescue mission to Elephant Island reaches Punta Arenas, Chile with all 28 men the crew of the Endurance alive and well.
